Brazilian presidential candidate dies in plane crash
Eduardo Campos’ airplane was heading from Rio de Janeiro to Santos when the accident happened. His party started to worry when he did not attend to an appointment and could not be contacted
Brazilian presidential candidate Eduardo Campos, 49, died this Wednesday morning in a plane accident. The private jet in which he was travelling crashed in a residential area of the port city of Santos, state of São Paulo. Recent presidential polls placed Campos in third position for the elections of this October.
The airplane was coming from Rio de Janeiro to Guarujá, also in São Paulo, when it was caught in bad weather conditions. According to his Socialist Party, Campos was accompanied by six people in the plane. There are no survivals. At least a photographer, a PR and two pilots are among the deceased.
After appearing on national television last night, Campos was expected to attend to a round of interviews at 10:30 am (local time), but did not appear. Members of the Socialist Party started to worry since they could not establish contact with the candidate.
The Brazilian Airforce has confirmed that the airplane involved in the accident, an Cessna 560XL, was the same one Campos was supposed to be in.
It was first said but then dismissed that Campos’ wife and one of his five children were among the victims. They are at the family’s home in Recife, state of Pernambuco. His vice-president candidate, former senator Marina Silva, was not traveling with him.
Campos was the governor of Pernambuco for two terms. He was also Minister of Science and Technology during the first mandate of former Brazilian president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva.
